Most people look forward to the city of Agra for visiting purposes. Why? Because it houses the Taj Mahal. And honestly, seeing it in person looks far better than just looking at photos. This Agra itinerary will help you explore the Taj Mahal and other must-see sights.
8:00 AM – Visit The Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal opens at sunrise. Thus, going early helps avoid crowds. It’s a 15-minute drive from Agra Cantt. train station. Most taxis drop you at the Purani Mandi entrance. You can also take a horse-drawn carriage, a rickshaw or walk 1 km to the garden entrance from there. The ticket counter is there, not at the main gate. Inside the gardens, you’ll be amazed by the monument’s beauty.
10:30 AM – Pay a Visit to Agra Fort
From the Taj Mahal, this site is just a 10-minute drive. Though Delhi was the main Mughal capital, Agra briefly served as the seat of power, and the emperors resided here. Started in sandstone by Emperor Akbar and later finished in marble by Shah Jahan, the fort holds intriguing stories of murder, drama, and imprisonment, making it a compelling spot for exploration.
12:30 PM – Have Lunch at Pinch of Since
We recommend this spot for several reasons. First, it’s reasonably priced. Second, it offers a range of cuisines for those not keen on Indian food. Third, it is clean and has decent food offerings. The restaurant is near the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Also, there’s enough seating space with soothing music. However, check with the staff about the spice level since most Indian dishes are on the spicy side.
2:00 PM – Head to Fatehpur Sikri
It is 40 kilometres from Agra (about a 1-hour drive). This fortified city was briefly the Mughal capital under Emperor Akbar. It has a beautiful mosque and three palaces for Akbar’s wives, each of whom followed different religions. The architecture of Fatehpur Sikri reflects Akbar’s creation of Din-e-Elahi, a religion blending Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam.
6:00 PM: Either Watch the Sunset at Mehtaab Bagh or Take a Boat Ride on the Yamuna
During October – March, Mehtaab Bagh is a great spot for sunset views behind the Taj Mahal. Located across the Yamuna River, it offers stunning views with a small entry fee (₹15 for Indians). Alternatively, for unique views, take a boat ride on the Yamuna River. From Dussehra Ghat, a 5-minute walk from the Taj Mahal’s West Gate, you can spend about ₹300 for a 20-minute boat ride. The view of the Taj Mahal from the river is breathtaking.
8:00 PM – Return to Delhi
If you’ve seen most of Agra and are ready to head back to Delhi, that’s great! Alternatively, you can stay overnight and return the next morning.
